For only the second time in my life, I wasn’t dreading gym class, mainly because I knew Phoenix would be there with me. Just a few hours ago, I’d been relishing Griffin’s company, and now I couldn’t wait to see his brother. It was strange to me how I felt the same rush of pleasure around both of them, but I really couldn’t pick a favorite. I was just happy when one of them was around. It was a little more tense when we were all together, but even that was kind of exciting. We were like an exclusive club or something, complete amongst ourselves. None of us seemed to need anyone else when we were together. Only problem was, the more time I spent with them, the worse it felt when we were apart.

I was dreading the few minutes I’d have to spend in the girl’s locker room, though. My social awkwardness and family reputation inspired cruel taunts and pranks when there were no teachers around to intervene. Unfortunately, the boys’ attention did not spare me any of the usual pain. In fact, if anything, it made it worse.

I ducked into the locker room, trying to stay as invisible as possible, but some of the girls were already wound up and looking for someone to antagonize. Kelsey Wainwright was the first to notice me.

She sidled up to me, her eyes squinted into half-slits, manicured hands on perfectly-curved hips. She tossed her long, mahogany hair and sneered. “Saw you with your new friends, Wren. Who are they, your cousins or something?”

There was no need to ask who she was talking about. I never hung out with anyone, and now I had two hunky guys driving me to school and hanging out with me at lunch and in class.

“No, we just met,” I mumbled, burying my head in my locker, pretending to search for something.

She grabbed my locker door and yanked it open so she could see me. “No way. Why else would they be hanging out with you? Unless you’re putting out or something.”

The other girls snickered at the idea. Most of them had stopped changing and turned to watch the showdown.

“That’s it, isn’t it? They saw a desperate little whore willing to give it up on the first day for a drop of attention. God knows, guys like that wouldn’t give you the time of day otherwise. You must be screwing both of them, the way you all pal around together. What’s that called — a menagerie? Kinky, Wren. I never would’ve expected that from you. Your mom, sure, but not her pathetic little daughter.”

The other girls gasped and started whispering, and my whole body burned with shame, dotting my pale skin with splotches of bright red. I wasn’t sleeping with the boys, but I was leading them on, wanting to be with both of them.

Coach Klein blew his whistle then, and the girls sauntered out, leaving me to wallow in my self-loathing. Errant tears dripped down my cheeks, and I wiped them on my arms then blew my nose on some toilet paper.
